February 26, 2019 Mike's Message - Keep Looking On For One More Run
When the powder is calling, we all wish to be out and enjoying every possible run of the season. Sometimes life gets in the way and we have to keep our focus on what is possible, because there is always more fun to be had.
In September, I underwent knee surgery and since then, it’s taken me a while to get back out on skis. Last week, I was able to do my first runs of the season on Saddle Mountain and it felt AWESOME! Just getting in a couple runs, gives us a good reason to stay healthy and continue moving forward.
Over the last few months, I’ve spent lots of days in the gym with one goal in mind… to get back out on the mountain this winter. It is amazing what you can do, when you have a great team by your side. I am fortunate to have an exceptional crew here that makes skiing safe and fun for everyone… even for us older guys!
On February 8, we had a special dedication to my good friend Warren Miller, with the spreading of his ashes alongside his son Kurt on a new run called, “Warren’s Way.” He had a gift that was to share and to celebrate what skiing has to offer. Now it is an honour to have Warren with us on Saddle Mountain and I will always look up to him and strive to meet the standards set by my friend.
Saddle Mountain is such a special place for me and the story of this incredible ski area continues, as we strive to develop new exciting runs for everyone to enjoy. We have been exploring a new area behind Saddle this winter called Hummingbird. It is a scenic area and offers some challenging terrain, for top skiers to enjoy.
One of the events that I look forward to the most in winter is the Annual Bruderschaft Friends Blue River Society ‘s Andy Aufschnaiter Memorial Cross Country Ski Race, at our spectacular cross-country ski trails. This event is now hosting a second generation of up and coming talented skiers and I’ve had so many great memories over the years cheering on my grandson Charlie and daughter Michelle. Skiing opened up my world when I was younger and it’s a privilege to be able to share the exhilarating fun of this sport.
Sharing the best powder in the world with so many great friends is a special thing. Next season will be the season of the century as we will be celebrating 50 years and I hope to see you here in the mountains with us. And as Warren once put it… “if you haven’t started planning your next ski trip at Mike Wiegele’s, you’ll only be one year older when you do.”
Let’s go skiing!
